Thanks to generous donations from people like you, Les Dames d'Escoffier Atlanta awarded more than $75,000 in scholarships to local women in support of their culinary education and awarded more than $30,000 to fund numerous sustainable food and hunger initiatives in our community this year.
We were able to help young women like Eboni Hughes, pictured above, a recent high school graduate from Salem High School in Conyers, GA. As a senior in high school Eboni maintained a 3.5 GPA while holding down 2 jobs and below are excerpts from her winning essay.
"Your career is what you get paid for, your calling is what you're made for. Ever since I was a little girl I can remember sitting in the kitchen with my mother on the holidays while she made her specialty, lasagna. While other children were watching Cartoon Network and Disney Channel, I was watching Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Fly on Food Network. Food has always been a big part of my life and my culture... As I got older, I became drowned and overwhelmed by the taste of food and I became overweight. By my sophomore year I was almost 200 pounds and food consumed my life. I then pushed myself to make a change for my health and I lost 20 pounds and felt the best I had my entire life. I took control of my life and food no longer took control of me... After I overcame being overweight, I gained my confidence back and my hope. I figured out my goal and the plan for my life, I wanted to cook healthy food that tasted good and appealed to children. My goal is to save the youth of America from obesity and show them that food is not our enemy but our savior... I am one child of three of a single mother and I watched her struggle and work hard to get food on the table and clothes on our back. We never went a day without a meal on the table but I know that she wondered where the next one would come from. I see how hard she worked and it motivated me to be the best I can be. Financial aid will help me pursue my dreams and take the burden and stress off my mother... Investing in me is worth it and I will not let you down."
